In a long career, pioneer film historian and left-wing documentary maker Paul Rotha directed only three features to which time and fashion have been less than kind. This bucolic drama was the first of the fictional trio. As with its successors, Cat and Mouse and The Silent Raid, the film's strongest aspect is the creation of a realistic background to the story, in this case the fanciful tale of an Irish tinker (Michael Gough), who accidentally kills a gamekeeper. After a brawl with the police, he's heading for the gallows, but he escapes, briefly, to enjoy a reunion with his wife and child. Despite sympathetic observation and good performances, it is rather naive and cannot compare with Rotha's earlier documentary work.
