LOVEFiLM Review Restless

  • 1.5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

With Gus van Sant at the helm and an impressive young cast in front of camera, Restless showed some promise. But with a bad script there's only so much you can do...

    [Highly rated reviewer]

A touching story well told and filmed. However something didn't seem right about it. Not sure if it was the acting or the script or maybe that the two didn't go together. Naturally expect more from Van sant.

adolescent angst and death are no strangelnad to mr van sant. he tackled them before, and dexteriously indeed, in 'elephant'. but resltess is born out of a very different sentiment, and speaks an altogether different cinematic language. it talks of death, but delicately and with innocence. its portrayal of dying is defined not so much but what is depitcted, or even how it is depitcted, but more by what is left out. when one begins to think why mr van sant has made these choice, the real exploration of the film's arguments begins.

  • Watch Harold and Maude instead

Got terribly upset watching this, since it's a total rip-off of Harold and Maude; pretentious, vacuous, AND the female lead is played by Mia Wasikowska (who's irked the hell out of me in Jane Eyre and Lawless already). But to then also see the featurettes where the scriptwriter never once refers to Harold and Maude, just gloating about his brainchild - to the point where friend/producer Bryce Dallas Howard comes off as utterly gullible as well - is downright appalling! However, ethics aside, and even if if I'd never seen the aforementioned classic: 'Restless' is just a bad movie.

  • An amazingly good film about coming of age

An masterpiece of its type, this film is hauntingly well acted by the two leads who are perfectly cast in story of love of life in the ominous presence of death. Both characters bring hope and understanding to each others diverse nature by eventually complimenting each others psyche. Hard to keep from feeling the inevitable joys and sorrows of all the cast in this film.

This story may feel a little slow at times but it's merit lies in the way all of the characters feelings changeas a result of the leads. Mia Wasikowska is excellent in this as was in Alice in Wonderland, not only calm on the outside but brave and resilient to negativity. Henry Hopper given the title role of a youth too messed up inside from past tragedy and despair not to be the rebel who's life is changed by the one person he really needs but does not realise immediately.

Romance - yes, gushing - no! If you observe this film you can' t fail to be moved by it's supernatural theme

Nothing that special but kinda quirky. Mia was like a young Wiona Ryder and she is star in the making. Hopper was a bit wooden. Altogether cute but forgetable
