Not entirely bad
By Quoth (38 reviews) from Milton Keynes , 01 Nov 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
I'm a big fan of the first movie, the ghosts were scary and the haunted house that turns out to be a haunted former mental asylum run by a madman. In 'Return' the sister of the only survivor of the original horror is coerced in to visiting the mansion, and she and those with her struggle to survive the horror again.
Now the premise is as shallow as you'd expect, and the acting leaves quite a lot to be desired, but that said it hangs together because of some quite creepy and slightly older school ghosts. Without being as grisley as the likes of Saw or Hostel you're never quite sure whether their intentions are good or bad, and what method they might choose to torment you.
Worth the 90 minutes, nothing spectacular but a creepy affair that kinda ties up the story if you're into that kind of thing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Same Haunted House, Same Ghosts, Nothing New
By ShoutOut (136 reviews) , 04 Apr 2012House on Haunted Hill manages to trap in lots of new people to haunt and kill.
Same house, same ghosts, different killing scenes but with the same outcome.
There's a scene where someone (think it was Ariel) could have got out to get help, but no! didn't want to leave friend behind, so now no-one knows they are there and they've got 12 hours to try to survive.
I only watched this as i've seen the first one; I should have known that not many sequels can conquer the heights of the first one.- Was this review helpful to you?

Loved the original, but this very poor sequel is a cheap cash-in.
By MrStrange (46 reviews) from Isle Of Wight , 27 Mar 2012Aside from some excellent make-up / prosthetics on the ghosts faces, this is as generic as low-budget horror films get. It tarnishes the name of the 1999 'House On Haunted Hill'
The plot set-up must have been thought up in about 5 minutes, the characters are all very poorly defined and just consist of the usual one-dimensional cliches, the pacing is very poor and doesn't build suspense, the acting is awful, the set's look cheap and fail miserably to recreate the scale and detail ones from the original, the CGI looks terrible, etc, etc.
All that made the 1999 version of 'House On Haunted Hill' such a great slice of quality horror-cheese is absent here. The creepy jitter-ghosts, the guy doing a great impression of Vincent Price, the quirky plot set-up about it being the ultimate haunted house / theme park ride, all of the atmosphere and imagination put into making the original memorable and creepy is simply not here.
It's a cheap, poorly put together cash-in and it shows.
2 stars, and that's just for the very impressive make-up on the ghosts faces. Everything else is terrible.- Was this review helpful to you?
