Most helpful review
simple precise elegant natural
By Tuttle (26 reviews) from Newdigate , 11 Aug 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
In the 'Making of' extra, the director Gotz Spielman is worrying about a technically difficult shot. But things turn out well and he smiles at the camera and says 'simple, precise, elegant, natural'. And that could describe the whole film. It has great balance amongst the characters, faultless acting and an unpredictable story. The question is, why aren't all films this good? I guess it's easy when you know how. If you like European cinema and you haven't seen it yet, put it on your list and look forward to it.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 19 Dec 2012a good film beautifully shot, acted and paced. Some stellar performances from Johannes Krisch, Irina Potapenko, Ursula Strauss, Andreas Lust and Hannes Thanheiser. I'm surprised it didn't win any Oscars.- Was this review helpful to you?

action that creeps along
By a customer , 21 Sep 2011A cool decidedly cold tale of 'revanche', played out in the Austrian countryside. Nothing at all overstated about any parts of the film, but it is engaging and well-played. Just don't expect revenge Steven Segal-style!- Was this review helpful to you?

Revanche - genius at work
By nieboerc (1 review) from london , 18 Mar 2011Brilliantly portrays the battle between good and bad in each of the characters as they come under ever greater pressure. The main character is fascinating as a mix of dark, heroic, tragic and honourable characteristics and the subtle ending is perfection.- Was this review helpful to you?

Deserved the Oscar for Best Wood-chopping
By Oldbloke (308 reviews) from Sidmouth , 10 Jan 2011Charmless monosyllabic ex-con Alex works in a Viennese brothel. After falling in love with a Ukrainan prostitute, he plans a bank robbery to fund their escape to a better life, but she is killed during the getaway. Hiding out at his grandfather's dilapidated farm, he discovers that the policeman who fired the fatal shot lives nearby with his unhappy childless wife. Highly atmospheric tale brilliantly contrasts urban and rural locations, the haves and the have-nots, the old and the young, the religious and the secular and they all add to what is a rich character study with a neat and understated conclusion. Highly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?
