A Portrait of a Fiercely Original Composer
By DJJJNO1 (6 reviews) from Luton , 22 Aug 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
This DVD captures the spiritual and uncompromising vision of spectralist Claude Vivier. The shadow of stockhausen looms clearly over his output. Yet there is a otherworldliness to this music which is haunting and unmistakably original.
The presentation of this portait is also deliciously avant garde. There is a well judged synergy between musical and visual elements.
The perfect 'Total Immersion' for a Vivier virgin...- Was this review helpful to you?

Strange sounds and extremely noisy
By Robert Smith from Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. , 17 Feb 2008The composer of the pieces included in this performance was a French Canadian, and it seems his parents were unknown. Having spent over 3 hours watching these dvds, I wondered if he had Canadian Indian ancestry. The screams, yells and other high pitched sounds, together with the use of the hands over the mouth, reminded me of Indian war dances. Apparently he was murdered, and my early opinion was it must have been done by a music lover. However there were bits of singing and orchestral sounds which were reasonably respectable. These plus the documentary on Vivier's life make these dvds worth a look.- Was this review helpful to you?
