Most helpful review Revolutionary Road

  • Solid enough but lacking any real bite or originality

    Rated - 2.0 stars
By Daniel Pollard from Manchester, England , 17 Feb 2009

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The latest film from Sam Mendes the acclaimed theatre director turned Hollywood darling by his first feature, American Beauty. He quickly followed this up with the Road to Perdition, Jarhead and now Revolution Road, adapted from the cult Richard Yates novel.

The film returns to the themes first covered by Mendes in American Beauty of mundane, bored and unfulfilled relationships behind the white middle class picket fences of suburban American. Unfortunately, this all sounds very familiar and when the film is running it does feel very outdated and dull. After watching David Lynch’s dark masterpiece Blue Velvet and even Mendes own American Beauty it’s easy to feel this is a soft touch lacking any real bite, satirical edge or originality.

On the plus side, the performances are solid, if a little too worthy, the cinematography is neat and unfussy and the supporting roles are good, even if they are very clichéd.

  • A great film

Kate Winslet. Married life in mid 1950s . A great film which is depressing to watch and about the conflicts, and frustrations, and dissatisfaction that accompany hope and aspiration in suburbia. It explores the pressures in relationships and is well acted.

Widely acclaimed but I concur with the 'Very Bland' review. Good performances but found the story lacking. Not a movie to watch when depressed!

  • Not quite revolutionary but a good movie

    Rated - 4.0 stars

The inertness of this film gives it a suffocating feel without really trying. The story brilliantly encapsulates the hopes of anyone wanting more from society/life than a middle class suburban dream. Yet, like a monster in a horror film, society/life seems to conspire against them to make their revolution difficult... There is a hunger burned up by this film that isn't quite satiated- the decisions made by the characters were sometimes confusing yet worthy of empathy. Great movie in its ability to create that hunger- it could have been more...

  • Very bland

I'll just start with the actors, yes they were amazing and i found them very convincing. It was also nice to see this pair reunited. But sadly the story line was boring, it was just so plain. Dissapointed and a waste of such great talent.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

Well right from the off it looks like this film is set in the 1950s.

'I mean what are you interested in?'

Frank's wife, April, is upset after the play that she is in.

'I guess it wasn't a triumph or anything.'

    - 'I guess not.'

It appears that they're having relationship problems.

'It strikes me that there is a considerable amount of b&*^$%%% going on here and there's a few things that I'd like to clear up!'

'You pathetic, self deluded little boy!'

'Don't look at me like that April.'

    - 'Could we please go home now.'

The introduction is almost ten minutes long!

I've got a feeling that comparisons could be made with American Beauty.

Its amazing that there is a guy in the lift controlling the floors and announcing the floor level! (Very old fashioned!)

    'Morning Jack.'

    - 'Nothing good about it, I assure you.'

So they come to move into a house in Revolutionary Road.

'Its just not efficient. Am I right?!'

It looks like Frank is going to start an affair with a secretary.

'I'd never even heard of Visual Aids.'

    - 'That's because, it doesn't exist.'

    Very 1950s Suburban America.

'I remember when you came off the train you weren't like my other clients you just seemed special.'

'Now here I am. A 30 Year Old Knox Man.'

It looks like Frank is about to start an affair.

'Frank Wheeler. You're the most interesting man that I have ever met.'

'Guess this wasn't what you had in mind when you went to work this morning!'

'Do you have a cigarette Frank?'

    'Frank.'

    - 'Why are you all dressed up?!'

It seems like Frank initially, anyway, is having is cake and eating it.

April wants them to sell up and move to Paris!

    'What's stopping us?!'

'For the first time in your life you're have time to actually start doing what you want to do.' - A very similar theme to American Beauty as I thought.

'When you first met me I was a little wise guy with a big mouth!'

'Its what you are that is being stifled.'

'This is our chance Frank. - This is our one chance!'

So it looks like they're going to Paris!

You can just tell that things are gonna go wrong!

    'What's your news?'

    - 'Fellows, I'm moving to Paris!'

Its amusing when Frank is explaining to his work colleagues over a beer that people are better off actually doing work that they like!

There's elements of Fight Club esq rebellion in this movie.

And now we're introduced to another couple..

It seems like Frank and April are putting the cat among the pigeons!

'So what's the deal Frank? - You got a job out there?'

    - 'No.'

Chip and his wife seem to be in a highly dysfunctional marriage!

    'Big Deal! - Huh!'

    'Are you a lawyer Frank?!'

No-one can understand why they're moving to Paris.

'Maybe we are running. - From the hopeless, emptiness of life here.'

'You know he was the first person who seemed to know what we were talking about.'

Its actually a bit Truman Show esq too in the sense no-one seems to understand Truman.

'I guess your dad would have been real proud of you!'

    April announces she is pregnant.

    Is Paris still gonna happen?

'I thought you turned the job done.'

    - 'Not yet. Its just an option that's all.'

'It is possible that Parisans aren't the only ones capable of living interesting lives April!' lol.

'It takes backbone to lead the life you want.'

    'Who made these rules anyway?!'

It also kind of reminds of the movie Changeling, how the lady lead in both goes to see a shrink, (but for different reasons).

'April. We can be happy here.'

'The plan always seemed a touch unrealistic wouldn't you say.'

    'Hey. Europe's not going anywhere!'

'Can't leave. Can't stay. - No damn use to anyone.'

Frank comes clean about this affair with April.

'Why don't you say how you feel?'

    - 'I don't feel anything.'

The character of John is fantastic!

'The way you look now, I'm beginning to feel sorry for him too!'

'.. Its the inability to love.'

This film shows how couples can go crazy through love.

    I thought she'd come back.

So it appears that April is now playing the dutiful wife.

'Yes. Its really kinda interesting, isn't it?!'

'And you don't hate me do you?'

    - 'No, of course I don't.'

I think this film is going to have a sad ending.

There's a nice act of rebellion at the very end!
