An impressive production
By gf (181 reviews) from Cullompton , 23 Jan 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
This is the first time I have seen this opera. It had no tunes I recognised apart from 'Here comes the Bride' which just about everyone knows. It was an interesting production, more so after watching the documentary on disc 3. The story is the sort of thing you expect from Wagner, fairly mythical, but of some interest. Lohengrin, at any rate in this production, was a bit of a prig. I enjoy the Elsa with a complex Finnish name. I really fell for her in the Tannhauser DVD but she seemed to have put on a bit of weight here. The music is very all embracing but as yet nothing like as gripping as Tristan and Isolde or the Ring. I will try and get to know the music better and see if it grabs me more. Still overall well worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Nice stairs - shame they didn't a break a leg
By a customer , 11 May 2011I am a novice to this opera and didn't enjoy it. The prelude to Acts 1 and 3 are the most well known pieces of music - now I know why - as the rest is lacking in any memorable or uplifting melody. I found the acting by the main cast wooden; the chorus were more interesting. The limited set meant there was little to appeal to the eye in the tedious parts and the denoument was laughable. Not something for the amateur or novice Wagner fan - start with something bolder and work up *or down to Lohengrin.- Was this review helpful to you?

Mesmerising production
By WestCountry (68 reviews) from Yeovil , 27 Mar 2011I was totally caught up in this engrossing, production. The main singers were hypnotic and talented (though Lohengrin sometimes became a 'light' tenor) with the ability to move and act both for the audience and the camera. They were ably supported by a magnificent orchestra who were perfectly balanced with the singers and chorus - well done the conductor and the sound engineer. The set is minimalist - which is not a problem as the story telling is so good.
I was surprised at how I was drawn into this opera - it really is worth watching- Was this review helpful to you?

Great performance
By GrahamR (3 reviews) from Wigan , 27 Oct 2010Opera recordings are often unsatisfactory in some way. This one hits the spot in every way - great singing, clear well balanced orchestral sound and a modern rendition which is in keeping with the opera. The acting is superb compared to some static performances from Bayreuth. It opened up the opera for me in a way I had not experienced previously. Perhaps the arrival of the swan could have been visually more dramatic but otherwise a great performance.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great
By doug777 (1 review) from Swindon , 05 Mar 2009A superb production captured on DVD - excellent sound quality, amazing and penetrating acting, wonderful realisation through the production. I loved the staging - simple yet really well suited to the story. This is moving, thrilling and intense ! My only negative point is that Lohengrin is not so well acted, despite his voice being amazing. Everyone else is superb.- Was this review helpful to you?
