Most likely, in his own words - Ricky Gervais is the funniest man in comedy. The fact is he never disappoints. As such, Animals is a great DVD to rent or own - also look into Politics - which is much the same -- but slightly darker and funnier. He's clearly still mastering his craft in Animals; it is unconventional comedy - but Rickies caustic whit is as brilliant as ever.

Perhaps I expected too much. Ricky Gervais in undoubtedly funny. But this did not make me really laugh. It was amusing enough though. His brand of humour worked better in the Office in my opinion. But you may think differnt.
The Office is a classic, this is very middle of the road. Rent Peter Kay instead. This won't have you laughing very much.
I think Ricky Gervais is far funnier when he's bouncing his houmour off other people, this standup buisness is not for him.
I'm no prude but i found some of his material offensive.

Being a fan of The Office I had to check this out. For me, Ricky was really funny as the cringeworthily inappropriate and misguided character he is more famous for. Also, some of the animal sketches were a la Eddie Izzard (or Richard Pryor's earlier standup) 'i bet this is what they're thinking when they...' educating in his familiarly deliberately ignorant way. It was the times when he stopped being silly and told 'funny' stories of his life where it didn't work for me. Some of his crude or disrespectful jokes could have been funny if they came from David Brent but as Ricky he came across a little like Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson. If he was more consistent in who he was trying to be it could have been a 5 star performance.
Having been a big fan of the Office, I watched this with high hopes and I wasn't disappointed. This had me in stiches for the whole hour or so, and is a non-stop piss take out of mother nature. Mainly targeting the Animal kingdom, he pokes fun at other areas including the Bible, Humans and the French!
Throughout he is constantly in the David Brent type character, cocky, informed, the source of all knowledge. This worked really well for me if you loved the Office I can nearly guarantee you will like this. If you haven't seen the Office, watch it anyway to see what you have been missing.
Pure Class.
Simply superb - I don't really like the office but have watched this 4 times in a week and still find it hilarious. Put it this way - we had to turn it off halfway through because my friend was too hung-over to be laughing that hard.
You'll be saying lines from it for months, and even my Dad was in stitches.
I suspect that underneath the pretence that he is an actor/comedian who observed the humour in middle-aged men who are arrogant, a bit socially awkward and crude, Ricky Gervais is just a middle-aged man who is arrogant, a bit socially awkward and crude.
Here he is doing stand-up about animals, but as he says he does it with David Brent's face and voice and body. And it is alright, but really nothing special, unless you think that the idea of homosexual animals is funny enough to fill half an hour.
I'm inclined to vote with Ian Hislop and say that it is banal and nothing new.
I was especially unimpressed with the "extras" which were basically nondescript backstage scenes, with a lot of criticism of Hislop and anyone who didn't think the show or Gervais were wonderful.
Such a shame, as "The Office" was so unique and well observed, that the follow-up would be disappointly mediocre.

Just goes to show Ricky is no one trick pony - really funny - and he has great timing.
For me an absolute must as i love Rickys humour- hes absolutely mad and i kind of new what to expect and wasnt dissapointed. One of the funniest men around in my opinion. Hes Sarcastic he has brilliant timing and is animated in all the right places.
observational comedy with a mental twist
dont expect anything before watching this dvd just sit down and prepare to be amused. CLASS!
