A TALE OF THE DISAPPEARENCE OF A WAY OF LIFE. TOLD WITH BRILLIANTLY SWEEPING VISUALS, A HAUNTING SOUNDTRACK AND INTELLIGENT (IF SOMEWHAT QUIETLY DELIVERED SCRIPT). A 'SLOW BURNER' IN PARTS, REFLECTING THE PACE OF LIFE AT THE TIME PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR BUT THE VIEWER IS SHOOK OUT OF THEIR REVERIE BY THE EXPLOSIVE AND GORY BATTLE SCENES. GOOD ACTING ALL ROUND, A GREAT 'OLD FASHIONED' FILM.

I like civil war movies and this story, the historical interest and the production are all the plus points of this movie. Not a fan of Mr Maguire and this movie hasn't changed that. Its worth watching though if only to see another side of history!

  • One for a wet Sunday

This movie, an adaptation of a dense and historically accurate novel about Missouri bushwhackers, seems unable to decide whether or not it wants to be a western. On the one hand, although it centres on the historic murderous raid on Lawrence, Kansas, it makes no reference at all to the legend of Jesse James, even though Frank James and Cole Younger actually took part in the raid. On the other hand, the film is full of western cliches, often done so half-heartedly you'll wish you were watching them done properly in Unforgiven or anything by Sam Peckinpah.

The film certainly looks nice, quite beautiful at times, but it's hard to engage with any of the characters, or in some cases to tell them apart. Jewel acts and looks so much like a bargain basement Renee Zellweger that on the many occasions I nodded off I woke to the nightmarish feeling I was sitting through Cold Mountain again.

One for a wet Sunday afternoon when you have something else to do at the same time - like the ironing.

Two Stars says it all. A poor storyline that has been done before and much better. Not worth the watch even on a rainy day.

  • A different take on the American Civil War

Firstly I must point out that there seems to have been some problems with the sound equipment when they made this film as at times I had my TV volume almost up at 'full', so don't worry it isn't your set or the disc, just bad sound! No technical Oscars for this then!

To the film; this is a view of the American Civil War that has not been covered in much detail, namely the militia battles that took place in Missouri. These reached their peak with Quantrill's band of thugs many of whom went on to become outlaws after the war was over. Perhaps the most famous being the James and Dalton gangs. Although these don't feature in this the thuggery which was perpetrated on the local population is well portrayed. The battle scenes are both violent and pacey with some superb horse stunts in the earlier skirmishes.

Tobey Maguire is excellent as the 'man in the middle' character and the film concludes in an unexpected way which is strangely satisfying.

All in all worth a couple of hours of your time but remember to turn it up!

  • Civil War Renegades Run Wild

I thought that this was an excellent rendition about a much misrepresented period of the Ameican Civil War.

Firstly the photography was excellent and well up the standard now expected of Ang Lee.

The cast worked their socks off to put in a memorable performance that was authentic and dignified.

The production and sets were very good and well thought out despite the fact that I don't believe that american children had Teddy Bears during the Civil War, as Theodore Roosevelt was 3 years old when the war started.

There was a very real feeling to the film and it portrayed atrocities and courage on both sides. This resulted in a film that was both moving and shocking which kept going at a respectable pace.

Well worth the money and I may even buy a copy as it was very, very good.
