GOOD WORLD CINEMA
By a customer from Somerset, England , 02 Feb 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
I don't usually write reviews but seeing the only other review of this film I wanted to redress the balance. This film may be sentimental but it is not banal. Although directed by Yimou Zhang it is not like the sumptuous House of Flying Daggers but more akin to Not One Less. The storyline is simple yet layered and portrays the Chinese character with great insight and understanding. That the main character is Japanese in such a warm storyline directed by one of China's great directors gives much hope for relations between the two countries and may well be intended as a metaphor. Some exquisite landscape photography too.- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)A remarkable film
By neworleansScott (3 reviews) , 29 Aug 2012A very powerful film about life, loss and love.
The acting by the main stars, both young and old, is riveting.
A lyrical, deeply felt and beautiful film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Humane and touching
By tzec (65 reviews) , 19 Mar 2012I found this to be moving, delicate and a delight on many levels. This was so well done that I sat spellbound for its entirety. It is a sad story, but full of redeeming features, mostly the humanity that can be shown to a lone traveller.
Not over sugared too.
A genuinely great film. Enjoy!- Was this review helpful to you?

well worth watching
By sailbatten (64 reviews) from London , 11 Feb 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
The movie is incredibly moving and accurate in contrasting the differences between the 2 cultures, and ends with a glowing optimism in showing how they can both learn from each other despite their past history.- Was this review helpful to you?

What a beautiful film
By a customer from London , 13 Dec 2010I came across this film while reading a review of Doris Doerrie's film 'Cherry blossoms'. As I loved this one, I thought I would watch 'Riding alone for thousands of miles' too and I was not disappointed.
This film is a real gem, especially for all those who are fed-up with the Hollywood blockbusters where everyone is handsome, perfect, happy, successful and lives an empty life full of stereotypes.
'Riding alone for thousands of miles' is not like this. It's about emotional depth, the complexities of the father-son relationship, humanity, the search for meaning of what life throws at us, the confrontation with our own shadow by diving into a foreign and unknown culture... everything surrounded by stunning scenaries and wonderfully interpreted by the main characters.
This is cinema that is simple, beautiful, touching and real!- Was this review helpful to you?
