I cannot reccomend this enough
By jennifer claire from Ireland , 17 Feb 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
This is Luciano Pavarotti in his absolute prime, in the role he was put on this Earth to sing, supported by Ingvar Wexell in the title role and generally good to excellent supports all around. Nominally let down by a less-than ideal Gilda, whose voice cannot match the famous recording earlier of Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland in the roles, but over all it is a fantastic version, full on and disturbingly bleak in its outlook.
Skilled lighting, make- up and camera work have made Pavarotti suitably handsome enough to be acceptable as the 'Adonis' the libretto claims for his character, and it is understandable why all these women swoon for him , even fatally so. Its true that visually Pavarotti is not a great actor, and when caught in close-up he seems not to know what to do with his features, but it s all there in the voice, as subtle and perfect a performance as any ever caught on film.
What is good here is so magnificent it easily compensates for what is less than perfect, and the whole package is much more than the sum of its parts.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Turn that picture off
By dspatchio (41 reviews) from Chelmsford , 21 Sep 2010Listen to this through your stereo, and you should love it. A young Pavarotti at his absolute best, Gruberova curling her lovely voice through the coloratura, Wixell powerful, a splendid Sparafucile. Switch the picture back on and it's literally a different story. Pavarotti clearly revels in his presentation as the Emperor Nero, but alas, Wixell and Sparafucile have had a heyday in the make-up room and end up looking like Monty Python extras. As too does Gruberova - something between Michael Palin and John Cleese. She looks absolutely ludicrous and her acting by numbers is awful. Compared with the recent Domingo Mantua version this is an utter disappointment. Mimed as well.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not only Pavarotti
By a customer from East midlands , 01 Apr 2010Pavarotti is outstanding. But he is not alone: Gruberova is also terrific; and Wixel is not far behind.
Add in great singing from the supporting actors as well as great music from the orchestra, and you can see why this performance has stood the test of time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Some resrvations
By gf (181 reviews) from Cullompton , 27 Apr 2008I love Rigoletto, I think it's a wonderful opera and I thoroughly enjoyed this production. But I did have some reservations. First Pavarotti. He has a wonderful voice and his solos were brilliant, I haven't heard La Done e mobile better sung. and this part is fine for his rather limited acting abilities. The trouble is when he is singing with others, he tends to dominate and this detracts from the overall effect especially in the quartet in the last act. Also on the whole I would have preferred a stage production. I felt some of the immediacy was lost in this film version. I have watched DVDs of this I have liked better but this is still very enjoyable.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent Rigoletto
By a customer from Glasgow, Scotland , 06 Sep 2007A great production which I strongly recommend. Wonderful theatrical performances from the leading cast including Pavarotti..... beautifully sung throughout. Arias, duets, quartets and chorus numbers given a polished delivery. Costumes and settings lovely.- Was this review helpful to you?
