DeCoteau's movies are in the mold of Castle/Corman. B-movie hokum, extreme low-budget, and usually starring a cast of cute guys that can't act to save their lives (but make great screen candy). Ring of Darkness is a poor example of his oeuvre (and the standards were pretty low in the first place). Check out DeCoteau's other movie Voodoo Academy for plenty of laughs (especially with the Director's Commentary). However, the stand-out factor here is the product placement: Some how DeCoteau has convinced Von Dutch to donate a shedload of gear for the film and he blatantly uses it on every single actor, accidentally providing an unexpected but highly enjoyable on-screen game of 'spot the Von Dutch logo'. Quite why Von Dutch wanted to flush their credibility right down the crapper is a mystery only matched by the total apathy of all involved in 'making' this film (the so-called boy-band single featured in the film is a particularly dreadful low-point). But, then again, there are always the cute guys. I guess.
Not one of David DeCoteau's best efforts, despite the much bigger budget. However, fans of his films will be glad to hear that this is still very typical - it pretends to be a 'straight' horror film about a zombie boyband, but is filmed like a softcore gay porno. The 'prettyboys' in his films are always more interested in each other than the token one dimensional women! If you're new to DeCoteau, you're better off watching his films 'Vodoo Academy' or 'I've Been Watching You'.
