Rio Lobo

Howard Hawks's final film once again teams him with John Wayne, with a script by Leigh Brackett (who also wrote his EL DORADO and RIO BRAVO). The time is just after the end of the Civil War. Wayne is Union Colonel Cord McNally, who is teamed with two Confederate soldiers he captured during the war in order to take down a thieving bootlegger. Their travels take them to a small town being held in terror by an evil Sheriff. McNally and his crew decide to help the townspeople with their own brand of justice. With a considerable amount of humor and Hawks's reliable formula in which a motley band of men unite for a common cause, RIO LOBO is a fitting conclusion to both his western trilogy and a distinguished career.

It may be a mite saddle-weary, but John Wayne's last film with director Howard Hawks has a wonderful sense of western occasion, together with a sardonic humour that lights up a listless story. Jorge Rivero and Bob's son, Chris Mitchum, play the Confederate looters snatching Union gold, and Wayne is the colonel trying to find the traitor who's feeding information to the robbers. Meanwhile, wild-eyed Jack Elam looks askance at the whole business. It's leisurely, but the characters and circumstance make a real impression.

Run of the mill Wayne western but still good

This is just a run of the mill westaern. Wayne has to find 2 men who gave vital information to the enemy in the American Civil War. Only for true John Wayne fans.
