Risky Business

Joel Goodson is the type of teenager who makes his parents proud: he's nice, handsome, intelligent, and even principled. But when Joel's parents leave town for a few days, a series of events occur that will change Joel's sheltered life. For starters, he meets Lana, a hooker who proceeds to deflower our young hero, and then suggests he turn his home into a house of prostitution for one evening. Joel agrees, and just as sexy hookers and randy guys turn Joel's house upside down, a representative from Princeton University arrives, to interview Joel! How Joel handles this and other crises (losing his dad's Porsche, the loss of all his furniture, falling in love with a prostitute) will alter Joel's life forever.

Starring Tom Cruise, Rebecca De Mornay, Curtis Armstrong, Richard Masur, Joe Pantoliano, Bronson Pinchot, Nicholas Pryor, Raphael Sbarge

In this bright comedy, Tom Cruise stars as the teenager who turns his parents' home into a brothel after an encounter with Rebecca De Mornay's entrepreneurial hooker. Writer/director Paul Brickman has honed a sharp satire on American go-getting here, as Cruise — parents away, with the use of their Porsche — starts making money out of his sexually frustrated friends. The danger, though, comes when a killer-pimp arrives on the scene (“never muck with a man's business”); that's when this comedy of embarrassment becomes a near-tragedy of class collisions. There's no such thing as a totally free enterprise.

    The American Dream

I haven't enjoyed a film so much for years.

Forget your recent American Pie(s), Road Trip etc, etc. This is the original adolescent movie. Quite similar to Ferris Buellers day off only the humour is a lot more subtle. It also has Rebecca DeMornay in it, and obviously Tom Cruise in one of his first roles.

If you have seen the recent "Girl Next Door" film, you will realise how much influence this film has had especially in recent years.

    Definitely worth renting!

    Good Fun

Tom Cruise early years. Easy going and very watchable this movie offers a mixture of subtle comedy coupled with a number of laugh out loud moments. Nothing original here but I've seen worse recent efforts. We enjoyed it.

Tom Cruise to receive acting honour

    • 12 Jul 2007

Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise is to be honoured this November at New York's Museum of Moving Image with a tribute to his film career. The actor, who may be well known for his private life but has clocked up a series of blockbusting and intelligent roles in the meantime, will follow in the footsteps of previous honourees such as Al Pacino and Julia Roberts with the award. Cruise has now been acting for 26 years; earlier work includes teen comedy Risky Business and his role as legendary... Read more
