    [Highly rated reviewer]

I saw the Riverdance stage show in Orlando 2 times. It is the most stunning and exhilarating show that I have ever seen. This DVD however does not give the show the justice that it deserves, which is the reason for three stars. You will be much better of and enjoy the show much more if you were to save your money and see them perform live.

I'll admit that I'm much more of a fan of Lord of the Dance and Celtic Tiger than Riverdance, but if it weren't for Riverdance the other shows would probably never have seen the light of day.

I remember watching the original video of this show, and looking back at that now it looks dated and poorly shot (compared to the other, more recent efforts). But please... whoever approved this 2002 version to be committed to DVD should consider their position within the Riverdance company.

Overall, as a number of other reviewers have pointed out, this version lacks the energy of other previous versions, and I couldn't help but get the feeling that everyone taking part is just tired of it these days - that they're only doing it because they have to. Too many musical numbers throughout delay the story (if there really is one) from being followed, and I'm sure there are more of these musical numbers in this version than there were in the original.

The lead dancers give an energy-lacking performance too - certainly we have seen better performances from earlier leads. It was nice, however, to find out that new segments had been created for the show in this incarnation - but once I saw them, it was no longer nice. It just felt like the whole thing was being dragged out even further.

However, the most entertaining feature of Riverdance 2002 is Colette Kidney, the soloist who performs in many of the vocal numbers. She's very good - at not being able to sing. In fact, some of the time, she has trouble hitting or holding the right notes and pitches. Watching the other singers who often surround her, I wondered when I looked at their faces if they really hadn't noticed how bad she is.

If you're thinking of watching this show, please do yourselves a favour and choose one of the other releases instead of this version - they're much better, and more faithful to the original show that many of us remember.

We watched the original show on video a few years ago, with michael flatly, and it was very good. However,This 2002 show was much better, the content and proffesionalism of the singers and dancers was superb. Recommended(we watched it twice before sending it back).

Having first rented 'Riverdance, Live from New York', my parents and I found this latest version relatively dull.

The camera work is a little irritating as the shots cut from one to another in quick succession.

Being a dancer myself I also tend to notice flaws in the dancers themselves and they are not quite as polished here as they were in New York - seeing every single dancer on the stage doing exactly the same move at exactly the same time is phenomenal and here they weren't quite in unison, which spoiled it quite a lot.

The lighting is poor throughout and in one particular scene the dancer is wearing a red dress with nothing but red lighting on her, which simply lead to colour saturation and ruined the piece.

We all prefered the music from New York as well, but that is just personal taste.

The lead, whatever his name is, does not compare with Colin Dunne in stage presence. We couldn't help but watch Colin Dunne dance.

So, basically, if you want to see Riverdance at its best, rent the DVD of it live in New York.

  • Entertaining but repetitive

I choose this title mainly for my daughter who is a budding dancer. There's no plot, of course. Just singing and dancing. Some of the performances are amazing but it's inconsistent and repetitive. We all started to fidget after the first half-hour and we ended up watching the rest in bits and pieces. If someone gave me free tickets to a live performance I think I'd try to sell them.
