  • And Daniel Craig was very good too!

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Intelligent and thought provoking and, with the exception of Jude Law's over the top hitman, very well acted. Newman as always is brilliant as is Tom Hank's take on a gangster of that era. Great direction, particularly the gunfire in the dark.

A good watch, men will love it, but it is a kind of film I would only watch once, if you like this kind of film I recommend it.

  • Great direction

Supreme direction, brilliant use of light and shade and its filled with magnificent shots. Yet it never seems as though Mendes is trying to make his mark on the film. Truly effortless direction, Tom Hanks is good but I get the sense he was just a little too understated. noticed the haunted look in the eyes but I would have thought he would have shown flashes of a determined streak to the character since he's essentially on a revenge mission. Though all in all I'd give Hanks a nine out of 10 for the conflicted anti-hero who is living for his son yet doing what he must. Great performance from the son, though I would have liked to see a little more vulnerability.

Not often you see Tom Hanks as a bit of a baddie but, as usual, a great performance from him.

  • Superb Gangster Film

    Rated - 4.0 stars

A classic styled gangster film set in the 1930s, with Tom Hanks on top form. It's a tender and moving story of a father and son bonding amidst violent circumstances. Directed by Sam Mebdes it avoids the need for gratuitous violence and many of the deaths are off screen. It has the feel and mood of gangster films of old and if you've not seen it then its well worth it.
