Roadkill

Director John Dahl knows his way around a thriller as few contemporary filmmakers do. He revitalized the film noir with his darkly witty films, RED ROCK WEST and THE LAST SEDUCTION. With ROADKILl, Dahl streamlines the plot and ratchets up the tension. Two brothers, Lewis (Paul Walker) and Fuller (Steve Zahn) are driving home cross-country. Fuller bullies Lewis into using the CB radio ("Prehistoric internet," Fuller calls it) to play a mean-spirited practical joke on a trucker, and it backfires horribly. The psychotic trucker comes after them, but they get away. Foolishly thinking they're out of danger, they pick up Venna (Leelee Sobieski), the girl Lewis has been pining for, on the way home. The mysterious trucker, who they know only by his CB handle, "Rusty Nail," goes further than they could ever imagine to exact his revenge. Zahn is pitch-perfect here, capturing both Fuller's charm and his stupid recklessness. Dahl builds the suspense beautifully, creating a real sense of being out on the highway in the middle of nowhere. The script, by Clay Tarver and J.J. Abrams, brings three strong characters to life with sharp, funny dialogue, fleshing out the bare bones of the plot.

This was a return to form for director John Dahl after the disappointments of Rounders and Unforgettable. College kid Paul Walker is on a road trip to pick up pal Leelee Sobieski, after taking a detour to bail his reckless brother (Steve Zahn) out of jail. Unfortunately, a late night prank with their CB radio gets the brothers on the wrong side of unseen trucker “Rusty Nail”, and it's not long before they're being chased by the clearly unhinged driver. This nicely paced and suspenseful teen movie combines elements of Duel and The Hitcher with a smart script, solid performances and enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat.

AKA Joy Ride in the US

rented this film as the trailer looked good, despite the fact that it hasn?t done that well on reviews. all in all, both my partner and i enjoyed this film even though we both have different tastes in films.

the plot covers two brothers, fuller (steve zahn) and lewis (paul walker ? the fast and the furious) who whilst on a long distance car trip buy a cb radio and decide to play a prank on a trucker. however when the prank goes wrong they discover the trucker has found out who they are and is stalking them on their journey. their journey takes a turn for the worse when they pick up lewis?s love interest venna (leelee sobiesky ? deep impact) when the trucker steps up a gear and starts terrorising all three of them more aggressively.

after a slightly slow start where the ?prank? is played this film builds up to a good level of tension and maintains it throughout the film, and unlike many films you can?t always predict what will happen next, keeping you on the edge of the seat and really engrossed in the film. there is some gore in this film, but the films main emphasis is psychological and the unexpected twists that it has. the only real down side is that after all the effort that has been made to keep you engrossed in the film, the ending was too predictable so the writers let themselves down here. however i?m not going to say too much about the film, as this really is a film everyone should watch, and i?ve no interest in spoiling a minute of it for any of you.

so if your into action, horror, thriller or mysteries, you will probably also enjoy this film

Is this really a comedy in disguise?

This has to be one of those films which you think has great potential, but is the script played for laughs. However, it made my girlfriend jump a couple of times, which is always a bonus! This is a Sunday afternoon hangover film at best.
