    [Highly rated reviewer]

Robin B Hood is amongst Jackie's best films of the past 10 or so years. He plays slightly against type as a proffesional thief but has his typical jack-the-lad persona to keep him likeable. For a very brief plot synopsis: Thongs (Chan) is a burglar with a gambling addiction, his partner Octopus (Louis Koo) is a complete swine to his wife. Together with their mentor 'Landlord' (Michael Hui) they go out to do a job. But this time it's a baby they're stealing. Chaos ensues as the police, the gangsters that hired them, and their own consciences start to track them down.

Jackie Chan gives one of his better performances as the honourable thief. He's completely believable and incredibly likeable. Louis Koo, whom I have previously only seen in (semi-)serious roles, does well as Chan's womanising partner Octopus and brings some perfect comedy timing into the mix. All of the supporting roles are played well and the few members of Chan's stunt team I recognised gave far more credible performances than in previous films.

Though there is a strong comic element here it is balanced well with the semi-seriousness of the script, I often find that the slapstick comedy of most of Chan's films detracts from the general plot but the humor here is far more subtle (most of the time) and very well used.

The action is well choreographed and nicely shot, much of it is very inventive and all of it is highly entertaining. There's a little twist at the end which is quite nicely done and I found that the whole film played out at a very nice pace. This is one I would strongly recommend to fans of Chan.

Chan's character Slipper is basically a good guy in a bad situation. His friend Octopus is a selfish, unlikeable guy with little to redeem him. Slipper has a massive gambling habit and is a constant disappointment to his family. They get themselves mixed up in the kidnapping of a baby that is meant to be terminated and end up becoming very attached to it. That's all in the cover blurb. What isn't in the blurb is how good Chan is when he plays characters with that extra bit of depth. You still get all the action, stunts and redunkulous fight moves, but there's more meat with your chop socky. And despite the sometimes over saccharin sweetness of the baby angle, there are times when the lump in your throat isn't just wind. A little charmer this one and I'd be happy to watch it again.

We rented this film on Jackie's reputation and having enjoyed many of his other films. We admire Jackie Chan as an actor, a personality and as an artist. However, we were deeply disappointed.

If you enjoyed such films as Project A, Who am I? or Miracles then we doubt that you will enjoy this film. It is more similar to Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars, Police Story or Armour of God. The style of humour in this film was more gross out than Jackie's usual slapstick martial arts.

We can't give any opinion on the end of the film, because we gave up long before then!
