this dvd is superb. my daughter Morwenna loves it. Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves, who is the friend to the poor and enemy to the law has it all. Lots of swashbuckling adventure, heroes, villians, romance, comedy, terrific cinematography, wonderful actors, great costumes, and a truly memorable musical score. It's a great story. Robin Hood(Kevin Costner) escapes from a foreign prison during the 12th century wars, comes home to find his father(Brian Blessed), a nobleman, murdered and the people of his beautiful countryside are starving. The person responsible for all this suffering - it's the Sheriff of Nottingham(Alan Rickman).

With King Richard also away at the wars, It is up to Robin to save the starving people, thwart the efforts of the Sheriff to take over the country, and save Maid Marion(Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) from the clutches of this madman.

He has lots of help though, as he hides out in Sherwood Forest with Littlejohn, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett ( played by Christian Slater), and the rest of the outlaws. He is also befriended by Azim ( played by Morgan Freeman), a Moor that escapes from the prison with Robin.

There's lots of great action and romance to follow. The sword fights, arrows blazing with fire in slow motion, explosions, along with the tender moments between Robin and Marion with the great musical score in the background.

    Fantastic!!!

  • Dated but still cool

I remembered when I first watched this I was only 15yo. Anyway, this is personally one of the best Robin Hood ever done. Good cast, Morgan Freeman in particular & good plot. Although it looks now of course dated this is still pretty good. Furthermore, Christian Slater is a little cutey baby in here :)

  • Still great entertainment 20 years on!

I recall going to see this film at the cinema shortly after it was launched 20 years ago in 1991. A huge advertising campaign at the time helped create a massive commercial success. A tidal wave of publicity, and the very successful 'Everyting I Do, I Do It For You' theme tune, sung by Bryan Adams and accompanied by a part trailer video, no doubt catapulted this action adventure movie to the top of the rankings in 1991. Indeed, the song lasted a record breaking 13 weeks at No.1 in the Pop Charts throughout the summer.

It does look a little dated now, and the length of the film (nearly 2 and a half hours) could have been compressed, but there are many memorable moments and it still provides great entertainment. There will always be those criticising Robin Hood speaking with an American accent, but my suggestion is don't analyse, just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Saw this again for the first time since its release. Still a great film, great entertainment, lots of humour. It's far-fetched, the American accents are corney, as are the mullet hair styles, - but it's fab family fun. Lots of action and derring-do, romance, nice plot, and a feel good factor at the end.
