Buckles are truly swashed and derring-do effectively done in this 12th-century adventure, which simply sets out to entertain handsomely and does so with a great deal of dash, flash and panache. Kevin Costner is more “Indiana Hood” than the Locksley lad of yore and Alan Rickman is a joy to behold as the panto-styled Sheriff of Nottingham, while Morgan Freeman's cultured Moor — Robin's early saviour — is a commanding, though unlikely, medieval presence. But it's director Kevin Reynolds who deserves the most praise for disguising such overfamiliar events with imaginative staging and a constantly roving camera, and turning in such an enjoyable popcorn epic.

A glum version, with little sense of community among the outlaws and an odd mix of acting styles. But it found great favour with the public, becoming one of the most commercially successful films of the year.

    superb..................

this dvd is superb. my daughter Morwenna loves it. Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves, who is the friend to the poor and enemy to the law has it all. Lots of swashbuckling adventure, heroes, villians, romance, comedy, terrific cinematography, wonderful actors, great costumes, and a truly memorable musical score. It's a great story. Robin Hood(Kevin Costner) escapes from a foreign prison during the 12th century wars, comes home to find his father(Brian Blessed), a nobleman, murdered and the people of his beautiful countryside are starving. The person responsible for all this suffering - it's the Sheriff of Nottingham(Alan Rickman).

With King Richard also away at the wars, It is up to Robin to save the starving people, thwart the efforts of the Sheriff to take over the country, and save Maid Marion(Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) from the clutches of this madman.

He has lots of help though, as he hides out in Sherwood Forest with Littlejohn, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett ( played by Christian Slater), and the rest of the outlaws. He is also befriended by Azim ( played by Morgan Freeman), a Moor that escapes from the prison with Robin.

There's lots of great action and romance to follow. The sword fights, arrows blazing with fire in slow motion, explosions, along with the tender moments between Robin and Marion with the great musical score in the background.

    Fantastic!!!

An American plays the part of an English hero? Damn right he did!

I just love this film! I lost track of the number of times I've seen it and enjoy the swashbuckling heroics as much as the first time. It's the same old story...revenge seeking hero, gorgeous damsel in distress and evil rotter to get in the way. But does Robin get his revenge and the girl? Too right he does...and you'll love every cheesy minute of him doing it too...especially THAT arrow shot :)

    Darker edge to story

The extended version gives a darker edge to the Sheriff Of Notingham, and gives greater insight into his background. Despite Costners dodgy accent I really enjoyed this film, and Christian Slaters accent was awful too.

    Brilliant historical adventure

I can't believe this film has such a low rating! OK, so it is rather Americanised but if you look past some of the twee stuff it is a great adventure romp.

The cast are generally good - OK so the characters are at times slight caricatures of themselves but it all works together without becoming ridiculous. Christian Slater as Will Scarlett has to be the highlight of the cast for me and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio makes a great Maid Marion.

The director's cut is a particular treat with the extra scenes of the Sheriff and Mortiana adding to the darker side of the film and explaining some other parts of the film.

This is a great fun, family film that should go down as a classic as it is great fun. Historical accuracy is not the be all and end all and this film does not take itself seriously enough for it to matter.

great acting by morgan freeman, and christian slater, not to mention the rest.

liked the way the charectors were introduced into there well known roles, made differently from the other tales.

    Good old-fashioned swashbuckling fun!

What it lacks in historical accuracy and plausibility it makes up for in good old fashioned swashbuckling entertainment. Fun for all the family (although I would like to see the original 12 rated cut again)

Kevin Costner is acted off the screen by Alan Rickman's gloriously over the top performance as the Sheriff "I'll cut his heart out with a spoon!" The romantic story is reasonably convincing and Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater flesh out the cast.

Of course there is also that song, but don't let that put you off!

    Robin Hood-

A good film and an excellent story. The main characters are all excellent.

However, it is unfortunate that lots of scenes are set in darkness and made it a little difficult to follow it at times.

    Overall, a good film.
