Most helpful review Robin Hood

  • One of the most filmed characters is well played by Russell Crowe, and with a different storyline

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I have watched every Robin Hood film , from Douglas Fairbanks' Silent Epic, through the magnificent Errol Flynn version and everything in between, including all TV versions---

and this is , whilst quite different to the original fable and indeed English History, very watchable, and certainly a bit above average.

It has a dash of the humour that we associate with the 1939 classic, it has a serious side in line with the original myth, it is well cast, well written , well filmed in excellent locations.

And it is also a real swashbuckler----real Boy's Own stuff.

A rip-roaring treat. I was surprised, simply because Robin Hood is probably one of the most filmed characters in cinematic and TV history. I thought nothing more could be wrung out of the character, certainly as the 1939 5-star version is probably my favourite film of all time.

But the very different storyline ( quite different to any version I have ever seen) makes it interesting as a change in the whole compendium of Robin Hood film. No Prince John, just KING John; set with a very different fictional historical setting to the norm. It works.

I remember when I first saw 'Robin & Marion', the Sean Connery/Audrey Hepburn version, that it 'worked' because it changed the plotline in an interesting way. This Scott/Crowe version works for me in the same way, though with no similarities at all to 'Robin & Marion'.

Big budget film, real action and adventure, with a dash of the humour that also added even more appeal to the authoritative 1939 version, this 2010 film is above-average and well worth a watch, especially for those who like good old-fashioned ripping yarns and tales of derring-do

Excellent film all round. Well worth watching and full of action. Great cast and their abilities greatly improved the experience.

  • Not as good as it could've been

Being a Nottingham lad, I'm always interested in Robin Hood films, but I have to say I was disappointed with this. The story never really seemed to pick up any pace, and just when it was starting to get going it ended. I expected a bit more from Ridley Scott. This is the sort of film to watch during the week when there's nothing on TV - it's not a Saturday night blockbuster!

I thought a film by Ridley Scott would be good - I was wrong. The whole film is dull. The soundtrack does nothing in terms of drawing out emotion. When characters die you don't care... In fact, when you watch it you probably won't care if you turn it off early. Watch Gladiator instead.

Rarely for me, I found this so boring I gave up after 2 attempts to watch it. I think I managed half an hour on the second attempt. I thoroughly enjoyed RCrowe in Les Mis and Gladiator but this didn't engage me at all. I usually love historical and mythical themes but not gratuitous violence so maybe that's where it lost me. Not worth the two quid. And yes, I did find the atrocious accent off putting. Irish, Norfolk, Geordie and Scottish all in one sentence? Nah, hinny!

I have watched this film twice now, and it is better than the first time. I enjoy the film and I like the storyline. I just think it's very long and some bits in the film just make it drag on a bit. Very good acting and storyline, just wouldn't watch it again for a long time.
