A bedtime story may be an unlikely foundation for the exploration of the excesses of the heavy rock industry, but without doubt it's a fairy tale that director Stephen Herek's riotous drama Rock Star most closely resembles. Dressed up in the clothing of hedonism and outrage, this rags-to-riches morality lesson is little more than a leather-pants clad Cinderella. Inspired by the real-life story of rock group Judas Priest, it centres on tribute band vocalist Mark Wahlberg, who learns life's harshest truths when he joins his rock heroes as their new lead singer. Coloured acid-bright with a series of boisterous vignettes plucked from documented rock history, the film is a wild and often hilarious trip — a well acted boys will be boys rampage with a romantic soft centre. Crazy episodes involving hotel furniture glued to ceilings, drug-fuelled orgies and groupie selection give the piece some Spinal Tap charm, while the pervasive old-school metal soundtrack is intoxicating enough to help distract from Jennifer Aniston's woeful miscasting as the rock chick girlfriend. The result is throwaway entertainment that's as fluffed up as the hair of the rockers it portrays, yet endearingly satisfying nonetheless.
Although based on a true story, this has little sense of reality about it, and is merely an uninteresting update of the familiar showbiz tale of the understudy who becomes a star.
When i first saw this film i was like WOW!!! I wanted to see it again, but the second time around wasnt that good!!! Its one of those films that you should watch as a one off and leave it at that!!! However I was shocked when I saw a young Zakk Wylde in it, as a guitarist I love this dude and this was one of the main reasons I wanted to watch it!!! I think everyone in it was really good, especially Timothy Spall!!! If your a rocker and in a band like myself, I suggest you dont watch this film with your misses, she'll release whats goin on behind the scenes LOL!!! Good insight to a metal band, got some great tunes and covers, got a brilliant cast, just like people have said, very predictable what happens next!!! watch it as a one off and you'll love it but it soon dawns on you after that second time!!!
As a rock music fan, I again find myself asking why it is that whenever they try to do a movie about this genre they come up with the same tiresome cliches and really just take the piss out of it?! The latter was done excellently in Spinal Tap, so why drag a so-called serious movie into same territory? Yes, the heavy metal genre is open to a lot of p*** taking - what with the hair, the clothes, the posing etc. - but this style of music sold huge amounts of records and is or was loved by many. Why cant someone make a believable movie about this genre?
Some of the scenes were just so ridiculous - like when Walberg and his guitarist have a disagreement during live performance of a song, and manage to chat at normal level - so the music just suddenly drops into the distant background!!
Also, during the period in which this is supposed to be set, yes there were plenty of COVER bands, but tribute bands hadn't really come along yet. And yet Walberg's original band is a tribute band and he's also in competition with several other tribute bands.
And, as they were meant to be a tribute band - why were they also doing covers of other bands songs, such as a Rainbow song?
Also, if you hadn't seen some of Jennifer Aniston's other movies from this outing you'd think she was an awful actress.
Lame, lame, lame!
Things are working out for Mark Wahlberg. His last three movies have done very nicely, thanks, at the box office, with decent reviews to match. Entourage, the HBO show he helped put together, and which is based on his own experience as an up-and-comer in Hollywood, is still riding high in the ratings. And then he took a supporting role to work with Martin Scorsese in The Departed and stole away with an Academy Award - which is more than his old Basketball Diaries pal Leonardo DiCaprio has...
