LOVEFiLM Review

It's loud, it's cheesy, it's got Tom Cruise topless... Rock of Ages is '80s fun!

A surprisingly entertaining, funny film.
By Kevvybabes (5 reviews) from Wednesbury , 11 Jun 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Rock of Ages is definitely more about the music than the plot with songs seeming to come every 10 minutes.
Rather than being out of place, Cruise gives a great performance as Stacee Jaxx, a mix of Axl Rose and Jim Morrison. His vocals are surprisingly good and his version of 'Pour some sugar on me' is the standout of the film.
Female lead Julianne Hough's vocals are simply adequate. At one point her character says she is a better singer than a dancer. I have to disagree.
There are some great performances from the other cast members with Malin Ackerman bringing her physical comedy chops to the party and Zeta-Jones getting all overwrought.- Was this review helpful to you?

(80)Not for me
By a customer , 23 May 2013Yes, painful. No likeable characters, Russell Brand particularly unfunny. Tom Cruise added nothing. Had to give up after 25 minutes- Was this review helpful to you?

Good old musical cheese
By Flick90 (4 reviews) from Kettering , 21 May 2013It's a carefree Saturday night in type of film. Some great songs you can sing along to - but what more do you need from a musical?? Definately will beseeing the stage version after seeing this film. Definately worth a watch- Was this review helpful to you?

fab for a girls night in
By Melli (2 reviews) , 20 May 2013I absolutely loved this - even my hubby watched it and could name every song and artist! Tom Cruise is excellent and strong vocal performances from the two leads holds it together. if you removed Russell Brand then it would get a 5* from me! proper sunday afternoon movie - no brains required. A bit of cheesy 80s rock nostalgia, get the girls round, have a glass or to and then start singing!- Was this review helpful to you?

A terrible musical, with the terrible Russell Brand.
By a customer , 13 May 2013This was utterly terrible. Firstly I was shocked and disappointed to see Russell Brand in the cast, and as usual he was well Russell Brand! And then the singing, a nightmare! Be warned it is just singing, no talking. Every time Tom Cruise came on the screen I thought the film was going to get better, but no it actually got worse. The only reason I gave it 1 star was because the song choices were good (lots of tracks from the 80's), although the use if the Journey song at the end was VERY predictable.- Was this review helpful to you?
