This is my take on this DVD but given it's only a rental I'm not trying to put you off too much. When I think of rockabilly what comes to mind is pretty wild dynamic music, twangy guitar chord based riffs combined with sinuous solos etc. Trouble is with this one is that Fred Solokow never really gets anywhere near the mood..he plays everything in a pretty subdued flat style. He also does a fair bit of out of tune singing in a similar vein which further detracts from the overall result. If you're already a good player looking to pick up some rockabilly secrets you might end up thinking 'this guy's basic technique isn't even so good'..he never plays anything even as intro/outro showcase type of thing anything that really convinces you he can do it anywhere near the greats himself and although not totally lacking in 'tasty' little elements that you might not have sussed yourself the overall programme is really upper beginners level stuff. I have not seen the Homespun rockabilly DVDs but I would say the Hot Licks 6 Rockbilly Greats is preferable to this..the Arlen Roth and Brian Setzer sections on this, even though short, give you more trademark rockabilly licks than this one.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)Basic to say the least!
By Nickyboy from Wales, UK , 07 Mar 2007There should be some sort of warning on the listing for this 'tuitional' dvd explaining that it is aimed at people who've never even seen a guitar before.
The oh-so dynamic Fred takes you on an in-depth tour around the chords of E, A and B7 in the first position. The leads up to the dizzy heights of watching Fred butcher 'That'll be the day' and 'Matchbox'.
Rent a Stray Cats dvd and zoom in on Brian's fingers instead.- Was this review helpful to you?
