Big toothy grins all round!

Made way back in time - in movie terms, anyway - in 2006, this great nature-on-the-rampage monster movie has inexplicably been denied a cinema release outside of its native Australia and gone straight to DVD everywhere else. I got so fed up of waiting I purchased an import copy last year having only seen the trailer online and it was worth every penny!

I won't waste time rehashing the story here, but suffice to say it's basically Jaws with a giant saltwater crocodile, beautifully filmed in an Aboriginal area of Northern Queensland previously unfilmed (according to the making-of documentary) and fast switches from a Tourist Board travelogue to a gripping battle for survival as members of the boat party are picked off one by one by a giant predator, which - like the shark in Jaws - is barely glimpsed until the showdown at the end. Think you can always guess who's going to survive these things? Well, think again!

It's also worth watching for the supporting role from the then unknown Sam Worthington, now obviously set to be a huge action star after Terminator 4 and the upcoming Avatar. And Rhada Mitchell, who is one of the most underrated actreses around, obviously very comfortable here playing her native Australian.

If I have a small niggle about this movie,it's that the crocodile is a bit too barrel-shaped and dark-coloured when you finally see it; I've

watched several nature documentaries in which salties are a mottled browny sort of colour and very sleek and slim, but that's probably just me being picky. After all, this thing is extremely well-fed! On the whole the croc FX are excellent, being designed by Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop.

Well worth 90 minutes of anyone's time. Think Lake Placid without the black humour!
