  • Exactly what a gangster film should look like

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Just the right amount of tension, violence, romantic interest, corruption, drama....Excellent pace. Just dark enough. Actors interpret their roles superbly, and the emotion between Freddo and Roberta is discernible and not carried out in a contrived way like in so many Hollywood productions. Well cast male actors - much more realistic and convincing than most gangster films of British production.

This is a proper gangster flick! Lock Stock, Layer Cake et al look like East Enders in comparison (especially since there is no outside Serbian/other eastern european gang involved, who doesn't even speak the correct Eastern European language - see Layer cake. Completely undermines any credibility of the film!).

  • good crime epic

Very good criminal drama about a gang of childhood friends who grow up to take over the heroin trade in 1980’s Rome. Three juvenile delinquents, “Lebanese”, “Ice” and “Dandy” kill a policeman on a joy riding jaunt and after prison emerge into Rome’s underground. Initially funding their activities through kidnapping they then take on other criminals for control of the city’s drug trade. So far so formulaic. What marks this film out some cracking performances particularly from Ice as haunted conflicted individual and the introduction into the storyline of the security services who use the gang for various illegal activities. This ties the film into contemporary Italian history nicely. This may be a crime opera but it knows it’s time and place. Chuck in a great soundtrack and you have a top notch crime drama. What I find interesting as well is like “Gomorrah” there is no attempt here to glamourize their activities. I think Italians have had to live with the consequences of organised crime and corruption for so long that the American style treatment a la Goodfellas wouldn’t wash. Well worth a watch.

Brilliant. Most probably won't agree but I preferred this to A Prophete. It can be a little sensational at times but it's all in the name of entertainment. The story is dark and tragic so it needs those scenes that glamorise certain aspects of being a gangster.

Gritty film about a bunch of worthless low-lifes. Acting is great, the film feels of the period, story moves along. For us though it was too depressing to be entertainment, it is about as cheerful as a news broadcast. If you're a gangster film fan it will deliver, but, it is far from the heights of a film like Mesrine.

This not fiction - this is reality, history. Unfortunately. And we know that history will repeat itself. History is repeating itself.
