  • Stellar Performances+Intelligent Script=must see

Room At the Top has its place in British film history as the first film to treat sex sensuously, even from a woman's perspective! Something quite daring in 1959 when the film was released. And the revelations revealed about the truths of what was then the accepted class system were long overdue.

But this film also boasts exceptional acting, an intelligent and sensitive script and some of the most magically realistic moments between two actors in love scenes that you will ever see in any film. Simone Signoret's acting awards were richly deserved for her moving portrayal of Alice, the forbidden love of Joe Lampton's (beautifully played by Lawrence Harvey) life and truly marks her out as one of the greatest screen actresses of all time.

As if any other reasons are needed for watching this treasure, it is also THE film that ushered in the 'Angry Young Man' era.

Lawrence Harvey, the first working class hero! An extrordinary performance. Often imitated, but never bettered. A classic.

Braine's book was an antidote to such works as 'Brideshead Revisited' and 'Dance to the Music of Time'. The picture it paints is coarse and reflects rhe reality of life in the post war world. The film is an excellent reading of the book and should be in every film buff's collection.

  • Top notch stuff

In 1959 postwar England, this was a shocking slap in the face to a complacent British film industry. Not only does it sport an amoral anti-hero at its centre, one who’s determined to make it to the top of the pile no matter who he screws over, but it also dares to show adults engaging in – and enjoying – consensual sex. And it still packs a punch today with Laurence Harvey perfectly harnessing his prickly demeanour to play one of the cinema’s first Angry Young Men. But the big attraction here remains Simone Signoret’s achingly vulnerable work as the lonely Frenchwoman, adrift and out of place in deepest industrial Yorkshire, who momentarily finds some happiness in the arms of her feckless young lover.

A very engaging film. Had a very strong atmosphere. I think the actors played their parts pretty well and convincingly, despite some other reviews. Would definately recommend others to watch.

One of the great 'it's grim up north' films of the late fifties. The whole thing is convincing except the performance of Laurence Harvey, who seems to make acting look like hard work. A superb film, though, which takes its place beside others of the same period like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and This Sporting Life.
