In this memorable collaboration between John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn, Wayne reprises his Oscar-winning role in True Grit and Hepburn plays the same kind of Bible-bashing spinster she portrayed in The African Queen. Here, Hepburn is the missionary who tames the truculence of one-eyed Wayne as they search for her father's killers. The performances are wonderful, but the film relies too much on its elderly leads and is flawed by Stuart Millar's sluggish direction. It remains eminently watchable, but ultimately looks more like a cash-in on our sympathies as we watch great stars going through their paces.
Disappointing Western too obviously patterned after True Grit and The African Queen. Having had the idea for outrageous star casting, the producers obviously decided erroneously that the film would make itself.
John Wayne does it again as the whiskey swilling Ruben (Rooster) Cogburn in this spin off from 'True Grit', the humour is still here as is the hard nosed tough gun fights and fist fights that was the trade mark of 'The Duke'. Kathrine Hepburn plays a very good part as the ageing bible thumping preachers daughter Eula Goodnight. All Wayne fans who have not yet seen this movie (why not?) then it is a must see, get it now!
A typical John Wayne film Great in bits and just good in others.
