I was really looking forward to watching this again after being gripped by it as a child. Oh dear.... should have left it in my memory. Yes, the acting is good and it's a story that needs to be told but I'd like to see a remake that would be much grittier and far less sanitised for the 21st century viewer. The opening scenes of village life in Africa were particularly unrealistic and looked like something out of an American bible class video! Maybe disc 2 and 3 are better but I'm not going to risk it.
Powerfully penned by Alex Haley it gives us a true insight into slavery in all the traditions of a bygone age that should never be forgotten. It shows the exploitation of the African people and how they were treated separated from their families for the white man's gain and greed, a story superbly portrayed.
