El Cont de Vori
By FranzFerdinand (22 reviews) , 30 Aug 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Very lively opera with the first act seeing the men off to the Saracen wars; and the second act returning...to their vulnerable wives who have to deal with the Count and his many letcherous mates disguised as nuns. Impeccably sung and funny in parts which Gioachino produced especially for the Parisian public.
You are never sure if the Countess is aware of the deceipt of Count Ory in finding refuge in the castle, but it seems that she takes full advantage of his advances in due course as her husband and band of soldiers return from the wars.
'Le Comte Ory', premiered in 1828 at the Paris Opera, was said to be a re-fashioning of the best music of 'Il viaggio a Reims' of 1825. The music is, however, less exciting than Rossini's best; but the action and colourful scenes are wonderfully rendered by the Met. Joyce di Donato, Diana Damrau, and Juan Diego Florez together are a real treat. You really need to see this performance accompanied by the French subtitles.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)A Great Opera but Glyndebourne did it better
By riskysmith (105 reviews) , 05 Oct 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
I already have a dvd of the Glyndebourne version of this opera, and I would give this 5 stars. For anyone who does not know this opera, it Rossini at his finest, and either of these discs are worth viewing. Vocally the Metropolitan opera version is excellent with fine singers in all the main characters. However as with all operas performed by this company there is too much applause from the audience, and the performers cause much of this by long sustained final notes. In addition the scenery in this production is minimal and no way as good as that of the Glyndebourne. Also this a very funny opera, and here the Glyndebourne version is much better supplied. As this opera is very special either disc can be recommended but do not miss the English based version.- Was this review helpful to you?
