Ken Loach's latest offering follows former SAS trooper and civilian contractor Fergus (Mark Womack) in his search to uncover the details surrounding the death of lifelong friend Frankie (John Bishop) on 'Route Irish', Iraq.

I want to give away as little as possible in this review so I will add very little to this brief synopsis. It suffices to say that Fergus' suspicions surrounding the official story of Frankie's death prove themselves to be true as he digs deeper and deeper into the murky world of privatised warfare.

Overall I found Route Irish to be a deeply engaging and enjoyable drama, which touched on several issues which have broadly been left untouched by contemporary cinema. The post 2001 privatisation of warfare and security work is a deeply troubling issue, and its absence from popular political discourses has been both noteworthy and troubling.

The film handles these issues in an accessible way, but does suffer form a degree of liberal naivety and over simplistic representations. As the story progresses the film delves further into these issues and doesn't let up until the final frame.

All in all I would rate it as one of the best films I've seen this year, and would highly recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in geopolitics and security issues.

Do not watch this for John Bishop, his part is very small. However, the story line is righjt up to date and gripping.

This is a tough one to watch but then how often do we see a jolly Ken Loach film?! It was a good story and the director slowly eases out the truth throughout the film although you will have guessed what really happened before the reveal at the end. It's a dark, shouty film and you can feel the director's anger simmering in almost every scene and by the time you reach the bleak ending you may want to stick some comedy on!

Good overview of the the psychological consequences of being a military contractor.

Good movie to watch if you can understand Northern Ireland accent!

A typical example of a Ken Loach film - raw, uncompromising and bordering on controversial - but not one of his best films to be honest.

It's pretty much the story of a man who refuses to accept the details surrounding his friend's death in Iraq. 'Wrong place, wrong time' is not enough for him, so he sets about discovering the truth. The film is then focused on his turmoil, his frustration and his anger , and this is unfortunately what lets the film down. The scenes and/or the main character's acting just aren't strong enough to make you feel for him or share what he is experiencing. There are some powerful images and some well written scenes, along with some good production that uses the usual colourless/greyed backdrop , it just never reaches the heights of the harrowing tale it could have been.
