This is a fast-paced thriller based on a screenplay co-written by celebrated Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. And that's what takes it a notch above the average Hollywood action film, as escaping convicts Jon Voight and Eric Roberts have far more depth than your typical gung-ho hero. Both landed Oscar nominations, as did Henry Richardson, whose dynamic editing gives Andrei Konchalovsky's superior direction the breakneck pace that will keep you on the edge of your seat. John P Ryan as a sadistic warden and Rebecca De Mornay as a trapped passenger also rise to the occasion.

Violent, foul-mouthed melodrama with no interest beyond breathtaking photography of the speeding train. Its general pretentiousness, perhaps, is also something to experience.

    Hypertension is a killer.

Exactly how this film works is a bit of mystery to me. A two line resume of the plot would probably have most studios running as far away from this project as possible. Yet, usually for a Golan-Globus production, it somehow works remarkably well.

A fine yet admittedly hammy piece of acting by Voight combined with a commendable performance by Roberts allows you to feel an empathy for two rather despicable characters while the Warden is made to be the villain of the piece, ultimately responsible for the corruption of the two prisoners, and by extension everything that happens around them.

However, it is the train that is the ultimate star of the show. It's entrance through the stream of a station depot presents it as a vehicle of great foreboding, growing evermore hideous and vile as it rips down the tracks destroying everything as it goes. Wreckage deposits itself on the engine, disfiguring it and turning into some sort of Devil locomotive. The sober ending was surprising, poignant and utterly fulfilling.

A hidden treasure of a movie. Well worth renting.

    EXCELLENT

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME .ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES IT COOL IS WHEN THE TRAIN CRASHES INTO THINGS..LIKE THE TRAIN WAS TOLD TO SWITCH ONTO ANOTHER TRACK TO AVOID GETTING HIT AND DIDN;T MOVE FAST ENOUGH...AND ALSO THE DEAD END TRACK BARRICADES AT THE END;THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER
