This interesting twist on the effect the 1960s really had on America is also a sad reminder of the late River Phoenix's talents as an actor. He plays Danny, a teenager who leads an unusual life — he and his parents (Judd Hirsch and Christine Lahti) have been on the run from the FBI for 17 years since the couple bombed a university research centre, blinding a janitor in the blast. Now Danny wants a more settled existence, and the film focuses on the family's attempts to keep together as he tries to break free. Both Phoenix and Hirsch are splendid, and director Sidney Lumet manages to keep the drama subtle instead of dissolving into mush. The result is a moving treat.

Things fall apart, as any student of crime will tell you. And if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) has a plan. He's in accounts, and he's been embezzling funds to feed his coke habit and keep his pretty wife happy, but he knows he can't go on indefinitely. What he doesn't know, is Gina (Marisa Tomei) has been two-timing him with his brother Hank (Ethan Hawke). If he had an inkling, Andy might have laid it out differently. Or maybe not. Hank needs...
