when they told me rem's monsterwas about river phoenix i was already beyond my fear of johnny depp, but i had seen it in cinema and hated the parent's characters like i like my parents not, wish river was still with us but film sucks a little after so many years, something has changed i guess...

I wanted to see some of River’s films I didn’t see when they were first released and the main cast: Christine Lahti, Judd Hirsch, River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton do not disappoint. The parents are on the run since River’s character was two years old, after blowing up a factory used to make naplam which was dropped on Vietnamese civilians. The F. B. I. are always chasing them and they now have another son. However River is now 17 and wants to go to Uni, but if he does it would mean not seeing the rest of his family again….River played a similar role in ‘Nikita’ where his parents were Russian sleeper spies living in the States and he gives an equally good performance here.

First time watching it and I love it! River Phoenix was a great actor! Such a shame he had to go so soon :(

But the movie is great! I absolutely adored it. It's definitely worth watching

I saw this when it was first released, mainly because of Christine Lahti, one of my all-time favourite actresses. She did not disappoint. It was good to see 60/70s politics treated seriously - hardly a sign of dope. In fact all the leads were great - Judd Hirsch, River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton. Although I have no children, I warn anyone who does that this one is likely to rip their hearts out. Thought-provoking, entertaining, great performances - just what cinema is about.

Sidney Lumet is still directing films into his 9th decade. That says something for his longevity within the business. One of his strengths is that he is very good with actors especially if he has a good script. He has one here in this 1985 film revisiting the aftermath of the Vietnam War. He makes the most of it, getting fine performances from Christine Lathi, Judd Hirsch and River Phoenix. Another strength here is that his tendency to over complicate a story is entirely absent and the film has a very strong through line which I found gripping from start to finish. There is a tendency for the film to tip into mushy sentimentality but it just manages to stay on the right side of things. Recommended.

An interesting storyline, but one that perhaps lacks in excitement. Enjoyable performances by both River Phoenix and Christine Lahti.

Conventional versus unconventional in this free spirited plot stooped in irony.
