An innovative production by Paris Opera of Dvorak's opera about a water nymph who falls in love with a human. Excellent singing throughout, particularly by Rene Fleming as the water nymph. This is a lesser known but fairly easy opera to get into, full of memorable melodies. Staging is most unusual, with the water nymphs paddling through the water in a (shallow) paddling pool. The visual and sound recording are excellent. Recommended.
I was disappointed with this dvd of Rusalka, having seen the much early Czech production of this opera. I agree with the singing of the main part, but what disappointed me completely was the staging, and the attempt to modernise it. A swimming pool is by no stretch of the imagination an alternative to a lake..This is a glorious opera , excellent orchestration and melody, and a must for any opera fan. However although much older the Czech dvd is the one to own, which I do.
