This is a challenging film, very different to the sort of cinema we usually see.

The film is a tour of Russian history and culture, set in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. There are no edits, there are over 2000 actors!! The camera glides through 33 rooms of the beautiful building - there is some amazing cinematography, my favourite scene being the elderly Catherine the Great running through the courtyard in the snow.

There are a number of DVD extras including another film of Sukorov's called Hubert Robert. Best of all is the fascinating documentary about the making of the film. The documentary discusses the film in the context of Russian culture, as well as explaining the ideas raised in it and the logisitics of how they actually made it! The documentary also explains the significance of a number of the scenes in the movie which is very helpful especially if, like me, you only have a very basic knowledge of Russian history.

Twenty-four hours later, I am still haunted by this very unique film. It takes a bit of a leap of faith in order to enjoy this film, I feel, for it is not the usual entertainment where the audience is force-fed an experience and told what to think and feel with scene cuts, dialogue, and musical cues. This film requires, first off, to go where the Director, Sokurov, and the wayward ghost of the Marquis de Custine lead, with only the Marquis' critical assessments of Russian culture and Sokurov's rebuttals to serve as dialogue. The interactions with other ghosts hint at historical backstories that are never fully revealed. The ghosts of Catherine the Great, Tzar Nicolas II and various spirits seem caught in certain moments of their lives and run off when confronted. The grand ball is a reenactment of the final ball held in Czarist Russia in 1913, which took place in that very ballroom, which has not seen dance or reverberated with music since that date. The acting is splendid - every movement seems thoughtful and appropriate to the era. The tour of Russian History as witnessed by the walls and former inhabitants of the Winter Palace is both illuminating and haunting. The final scene brings it all into perspective, and leaves you with a profound idea of what a national museum truly is in spirit. It is an experience I won't soon forget.

Although the film is amazingly beautiful and technically brilliant, I found it slow and boring at times. I would only recommend it for its technical attributes

This was a visual feast but have to admit I fast-forwarded through sections as it was a tad long and I couldn't get into the story (such as it was). Great if you want to see inside the Hermitage and the treasures it holds. Not sure I would recommend it for general viewing.

This journey through different time periods of St Petersburg's Hermitage would probably be unknown outside Russia but for it's main technical macguffin - all 90 minutes of it is one single take. Whilst it's an imaginative way to guide you round the Winter Palace and its contents, it's still more tour than film. The method of its execution only highlights the fact, reminding you as it does that you tend to spend a lot of time queueing when you visit a museum.

Phenominal, interesting and challenging to watch. Obviously shot using digital technology, the film is one long continuous take. We drift through Russian history as we are talked though it and led through it by an unseen character (presumably us) and a beguiling character who can only be seen by some characters in the film. Truly innovative.
