Factory worker Barry Kane (Robert Cummings) finds himself branded an industrial saboteur after a fire breaks out in the workplace. The extinguisher he handed to his colleague and best friend itself burst into flame, and Kane is now on the run, determined to find the real culprit and so prove his innocence. The only person who believes his story is Patricia Martin (Priscilla Lane), who aids him in his flight from the authorities. Alfred Hitchcock's suspenseful chase film, a contribution to America's wartime propaganda, can be seen as a precursor to his later success 'North by Northwest'.

For me this Hitchcock film stands the test of time,it has a superb cast and unlike many of todays films it does`nt wonder of the plot from a film fans point of view the picture fills the screen we don`t have the camera stuck up the actors nose or with the top of his head missing, ............ a must for any Hitchcock fan.

Classic hitchcock. Fantastic!

This really is years ahead of its time as regards the plot and a lot faster moving than many of the films of the era. A truly under rated classic and one of hitchcocks best!

A young Hitchkock masterpiece

A detailed observation of war-time America, with Hitckock's style of leading you along many routes before you get to your destination. Enjoyable, although at times surprising to a modern viewer.

One of my favourite Hitchcock films. A classic suspense, edge-of-seat thriller all the way.

Norman Lloyd's tribute to Hitchcock in the 'Making of the film' was wonderful.

An excellent thriller with unmistakeable Hitchcock touches and a sinister, but excellent, cast. Well worth watching.

Puzzling

I've read other reviews and cannot understand why this film is highly regarded - only Arthur Halliwell refers to it as 'flawed'. We found it banal to the point of utter boredom, apart from the occasional chuckle at the absurdity of the plot and the total incomprehension of the motivation. It was made for propaganda purposes in 1942, but Hitchcock was capable of so much better. Perhaps the story was dictated by Edgar Hoover !!
