Sydney Pollack directs Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond in this remake of the 1954 Billy Wilder romantic comedy. Ford and Greg Kinnear portray a pair of brothers who are both potential heirs to the Larrabee family fortune. David, a dashing playboy, and Linus, a sensible stodgy businessman, both end up vying for the affections of Sabrina (Ormond), the chauffeur's daughter, after she returns elegantly transformed from a sojourn in Paris. Pollack presents an effortless contemporary telling of this classic Cinderella story.

Sydney Pollack must have known before he embarked on this remake of Billy Wilder's 1954 comedy classic, that the ghosts of Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden would be hovering over his production. Yet, with canny casting and some subtle updating, he succeeded in coming up with a charming variation on this Cinderella story, in which the chauffeur's daughter romances the billionaire boss. Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford take a while to settle into their roles, unlike Greg Kinnear, who gives a vibrant debut performance as Ford's brattish brother. Fans of the original won't be satisfied, but, by the end, there's no doubt Pollack achieves a sparkle to match the picture's undoubted polish.

  • A waste of effort for all concerned: the story seems tired, the performances are inferior, the romance and comedy have been dissipated, and there is very little left to engage the attention, other than to wonder why anyone should want to remake the Wilder

    Heresy

Well it is heresy, isn't it, to prefer this version to the Audrey Hepburn classic, but nonetheless I do. Ormond is every bit as beautiful as Hepburn, but more human, and it is simply much more believable that a vibrant young woman would fall for Harrison Ford rather than Humphrey Bogart (OK, Lauren Bacall notwithstanding).

Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is two and a half years clean. But now she's out of prison and it's nowhere near as easy to pull herself back together as she imagined. She needs to get a job. She needs to get away from the halfway house that feels like it's sucking her back inside. And more than anything she needs to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter Sabrina, who's been brought up by her brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Lynette (Brad William Henke and Bridget Barkan)....
