this dvd is superb, and consists of the BBC adaption of Ruby in the Smoke from a series of novels by the award-winning author, Philip Pullman.
The stories follow the courageous and vibrant young heroine, Sally Lockhart, played here by award-winning actress, Billie Piper, who is a 16-year-old sleuth in the Victorian era.
Sally who is recently orphaned, is alone and being hunted by an assassin.
With her new friends - young photographer Frederick and quick-witted street child Jim - she must discover her father's killer.
Facing them is an unseen, murderous opponent and at the heart of it all, the deadly, blood-drenched secret of the ruby in the smoke.
A fabulous gritty drama, that is well worth watching and renting out.
If you like period mystery dramas then this is for you. Quite a good story - although a little slow in places - but overall I would recommend this title.
I will only recommend this title to put on during a Sunday afternoon nap.

Billie Piper shines like a super nova in the title role as Sally Lockhart. The storylines are first rate, the screenplays looses nothing in the interpretation, and the supporting cast are equally talented These two stories are perhaps the finest costume dramas produced by the BBC for many a year. A pity there are only two stories!
If you enjoy period dramas, or a good mystery then these DVD's are a 'must see!'
i loved the books
love the films
although billie piper isnt as tough as i thought her character should be i still loved it, its gripping, its funny. just loved it
Can't imagine why I requested rental of this - its good Sunday afternoon TV drama -
An intelligent and engaging story. I get fed up with watching things that are just action-based: it is a relief to find something with an actual storyline that unfolds.
Average tale. Along the lines of Oliver Twist, but definately not as good!
Not a big fan of this sort of thing but both Billie Piper and Julie Walters (who finally manages to do a decent role!) are brilliant. The rest is just Sunday Evening ITV esq rubbish. Still looking forward to the second one
