Ken Russell's career continued to slide downwards with this execrable re-working of Oscar Wilde's banned play, as an end of the pier show acted by some of his pals. The whole grossly over-the-top farrago shrieks ill-disciplined excess and truly abominable acting, particularly from Russell himself, who bounces around the small enclosed set as a leering, ruddy-faced photographer. Glenda Jackson, who turns in a bizarre Herodias, must be greatly regretting her involvement in this one. Worth watching only for Stratford Johns's ability to invest a tiresome Herod with a wry, mischievous air.
