My goodness what a gob that Maria Ewing?s got! She?d certainly have no problems eating a Mars bar sideways. Still, it?s a very dramatic performance. This (with Elektra) is Strauss at his most expressionistic and compressed. Oscar Wilde?s play seems to work peculiarly well in German ? teetering on the very brink of banality. You can see why it caused such a furore when it was first performed. Its sensibilities are very much of its time and the staging and costumes recreate an atmosphere of the first years of the last century. I love the bit at the end where King Herod commands that Salome be crushed to death under the shields of his body guards ? so satisfying.
Womderful opera but like all theatre performances it is far better to see it on the stage. Camera work poor because it shows too many close-ups and not enough of the whole scene. This DVD is only worth seeing to refresh your memory, far better to listen on CD.
