Samaritan Girl

Director Kim Ki-Duk
Run time 115 mins Certificate 18

22nd November 2011

Ki-duk Kim, writer and director of ‘The Isle’ and writer of ‘Spring Summer Autumn Winter and Spring’, fills both roles for this later work. The first act has an almost carefree tone, uncomfortably so given the subject matter, but still well played. Inevitably things become more serious, and a crisis point is reached, but somehow events remain rather low key despite the gravity of the situation and, in my view, it’s only a powerful performance from Eol Lee as the father that holds things together. A thought provoking watch, but ultimately the empty spaces which normal people would fill with communication let the film down for me, still worth seeing though.
