Excellent... An incredible pleasure to watch...

An incredible pleasure to watch... The light-hearted nature of the film brings some truly side-splitting moments to the screen. Intriguingly nothing is given away too quickly, it draws you in... nothing, however, quite prepares you for the horror of the final showdown. The film maintains a good momentum and contains scenes of violence, humour and philosophical introspection in equal measure. Toshiro Mifune excels as usual in the main role, exuding a brooding and pragmatic demeanour. A decent follow up to Yojimbo, especially for Kurosawa fans.- Was this review helpful to you?

Brillant samurai tale
By brokenking (255 reviews) from Bristol , 18 Mar 2011I wonder if Kurosawa ever made a bad samurai film. This is certainly not his masterpiece but when you've made films like 'Seven Samurai' and 'Yojimbo' you'd be hard pressed to top those achievements.
Like 'Rashomon' this film centres around a criminal investigation based in and around a local lord's castle. Unlike 'Rashomon' this film doesn't work on re-telling a story from various viewpoints, but simply works on the premise of the characters trying work out who is chief criminal in the area and exposing them. In lesser hands this would be run of the mill but Kurosawa is not 'lesser hands' so manages this into another great tale of samurai adventure.- Was this review helpful to you?

Toshiro Mifune

However both script and lack of props,extras made this rather slow and tedious.Toshiro Mifune was again immense and carries the entire movie he was 4 stars the movie was 2.5. Given more latitude he would have pushed the movie to higher bounds. Only watch this one if you have nothing better to do- Was this review helpful to you?

Very Disappointing
By a customer from South East England , 20 Jun 2010I never thought I would give up on a movie by Kurosawa but I pulled the plug on this one after half-an-hour. It was a very tedious thirty minutes. Samurai and comedy just don't mix. Forget this one and rent Red Beard, High and Low or Ikiru instead.- Was this review helpful to you?
