More extravagant, but less controlled than his infamous allegorical western, El Topo, Alexandro Jodorowsky's cross-cultural collage of ideas and images borrows freely from such diverse sources as Freud, Fellini and Ferrara, de Milo, Marceau and Psycho. Using the circus as a microcosm, Jodorowsky combines the sacred and the psychedelic, the psychological and the symbolic, as a magician (played variously by the director's sons, Adan and Axel) goes on a murderous rampage to avenge the aerialist mother whose arms were severed by the knife-throwing husband she caught in flagrante delicto with the tattooed lady. Unsurprisingly, salvation comes in the form of deaf-mute, Sabrina Dennison.

  • "...The quality Jodorowsky has above all is passionate sincerity. Apart from his wild creative style, apart from his images, apart from his story inventions, he has strong moral feelings..."

    Psychomagic!

This extras DVD contains much more than just references to 'Santa Sangre'. Jodorowsky is interviewed and explains in action the Psychomagic Therapy.

Louis Mouchet's 1994 documentary La Constellation Jodorowsky contains footage of one of Jodorowsky's weekly Paris workshops in which he treats patients at no charge.

Psychomagic it's a form of psychotherapy invented by Jodorowsky and practiced only by him, his son Cristóbal Axel (who starred as Fénix in Santa Sangre) and his wife Mariana Costa, that combines art, Eastern philosophies (particularly Zen Buddhism), mysticism and modern psychotherapy to heal patients with emotional problems.

    Look Ma, No Hands!

Santa Sangre is a masterpiece, filled with subtle meanings and symbolism that require at least a second viewing to fully comprehend. Be prepared for a deeply surreal, disturbing but moving film.

This is the first Alejandro Jodorowsky film I have seen, and I can see from this that he is a master. Scenes are superbly crafted, and the costume and setting are wonderfully surreal.

The story is about a boy, who after watching his drunken father cut off his mothers arms in a rage is confined in a psychiatric hospital. He escapes and his mother takes control of his arms, using them to wreak revenge and murder on unsuspecting women. There is much, much more to the story but I dont want to give too much away.

There are many disturbing and gory scenes in this film, like when we see an elephant spilling blood from its trunk, or when a man pulls his ear off to feed to a mute girl. This film is apparently one of Tarentino's favourites and it is easy to see how it has influenced his own.

I am not a huge fan of horror which explains why it has been rated four stars, but I loved this film. It evoked the full spectrum of emotions and really leaves you puzzling over it.
