"...Her voice is unique, a breathy smoky thing that transforms without warning into a vulpine howl..."
"...Her voice is a thing of wonder..."
Sarah McLachlan seems destined to be less appreciated in this country than she is in the rest of the world, and on the evidence of this 'VH1 Storytellers' live show, that's a shame.
With her band on excellent form, Sarah McLachlan turns in a great performance in an agreeably intimate setting, covering songs from early albums to the present day (The show appears to have been taped in 1998, judging from the numerous allusions to Sarah's 30th birthday).
If you have the home cinematic means to listen to this dvd in DTS 5.1 surround sound then I highly recommend that you do so, as it will add greatly to your enjoyment of the songs being performed -It's a dynamic and layered show which benefits greatly from the digital audio/visual clarity of the DVD format.
Highpoints? 'Adia', some of Sarah's between-song asides (I have a new appreciation for 'Angel', now knowing the subject matter which in part inspired it) and a fun guest appearance from Paula Cole, whose appearance suggests that she was going to a fancy dress party afterwards and not a live taping, if her neo-Pocahontas garb is anything to go by. She can belt out a tune, mind you.
Well worth forty-five minutes of your time.
If you like Sarah Mclachlan, you'll like this! This dvd is quite a personal performance of a number of her best songs. Aswell as the fabulous singing, Sarah talks about how she came to write the songs and what they are all about, something i'd often wondered or tried to guess. Really enjoyed it, its just a shame its not longer!
