'Destined to become a Halloween Classic'
'Pure brilliance'
Director Jeff Lieberman made some of the most interesting low budget horror films of the late 70's (BLUE SUNSHINE, SQUIRM, JUST BEFORE DAWN) before disappearing into obscurity. His comeback is this neat little horror comedy in which a silent psycho-killer dressed in a malevolent 'Satan' costume stalks a family on Halloween. Far from being the usual slasher schtick, this is subtly subversive (best line : 'Jesus is Satan!') and the anarchist in Lieberman relishes the scenes in which small town USA spills over into chaos. Amanda Plummer is fun as our heroes' stoner mom, and, if you're watching this for cleavage, gorgeous blonde heroine Katheryn Winnick provides plenty.
As far as cheap horror movies go this isn't that bad really. It never takes itself too seriously, which makes all the difference.
Katheryn Winnick is the token blonde who can't act but looks cute and Amanda Plummer from Pulp Fiction is her boozy mum. Stupid but fun horror.
