Director John Badham's hit film propelled John Travolta to stardom, made white polyester suits an instant fashion craze, and garnered praise for its portrayal of blue-collar life. Nineteen-year-old Brooklyn native Tony Manero (Travolta) lives for Saturday nights at the local disco, where he's king of the club, thanks to his stylish moves on the dance floor. But outside of the club, things don't look so rosy. At home, Tony fights constantly with his father and has to compete with his family's starry-eyed view of his older brother, a priest. Nor can he find satisfaction at his dead-end job at a paint store. However, things begin to change when he spies Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) in the disco and starts training with her for the club's dance competition. Stephanie dreams of the world beyond Brooklyn, and her plans to move to the big city just over the bridge soon change Tony's life forever. This portrait of young Brooklyn natives struggling to escape their sheltered lives for freedom and adventure in the big city of Manhattan defined a generation of disco dancers and 1970s youths rebelling against the more traditional expectations of their parents. Set to the popular dance music of the Bee Gees, this instant cinematic sensation revealed the fashions and aspirations of an underground culture to the world.

John Travolta's role here as Tony Manero, the bum from Brooklyn who becomes king of the New York disco scene, turned him from a B-list TV actor into, for a time, the hottest movie star in the world and a pop-culture icon. Party-poopers may find the whole thing a cringeworthy period piece and a reminder that the 1970s really were the naffest decade. But most will sit back and enjoy the snazzy dancing (much of it with co-star Karen Lynn Gorney), the memorable soundtrack — featuring classic songs from the Bee Gees, Tavares and KC and the Sunshine Band — and the all-round, high-energy entertainment.
Foul-mouthed, fast-paced slice of life which plays like an updated version of Marty except that all the characters seem to have crawled from under stones. The slick direction, fast editing and exciting dance numbers do something to take away the so
I have got the 12 inch LP album of this film. The score is brilliant : night fever, staying alive, how deep is your love, and of course, disco inferno (burn, baby burn!!!!!). The acting is 70's but boy, the dancing (made quite sleek and mesmerising by the cool JT - John Travolta) is unique. I have sen this film many times and will see it again. Each time I see it, it not only reminds me of my disco days but also shows how much effort was put into making musicals in the days when technology wasn't ''advanced'' - if you see what I mean!!! I will recommend this to anyone. Great family entertainment.
Saturday Night Fever is often noted for the 70s dancing, music, clothes etc and often viewed in a comical light for this reason. I see it as a brilliant portrayal of a people and a time. It was a very low budget film, many of the scenes were shot in real places and many of the people were real people, not acctors e.g. the Puerto Rican dancers were just a Puerto Rican couple who used to enter local dance contests and agreed to be filmed. This lends the film an authenticity that cannot be bought. John Travolta is superb in his role of a young man in a tough world. Uneducated he appears to lack the intellectual ability to reflect on moral values but he instinctively feels when something is not right and struggles to reconcile himself with the racist, mysoginistic values held by those around him.
The soundtrack by the Beegees was actually a demo and is the perfect backdrop for the film. All in all a superbly made film.
Media tycoon Simon Cowell has a new project in the works - the American Idol boss reportedly plans to remake John Travolta's classic dance movie Saturday Night Fever. Cowell is already said to have drawn up a list of actors to replace Travolta - with High School Musical star Zac Efron the frontrunner for the role of disco king Tony Manero. And the music mogul reportedly wants to draft superproducer Timbaland to rework the 1977 film's hit soundtrack, which was originally written and recorded by Read more
