This is the first of five compilations of studio performances by music guests on the top-rated American comedy revue show 'Saturday Night Live', and concentrates on the years 1975 to 1978. There's some terrific material, most of it never seen on UK TV, including the big-haired Billy Joel singing his theme song 'Piano Man', Simon & Garfunkle with 'The Boxer', Carly Simon miming to 'You're So Vain', Patti Smith's seminal punk anthem 'Gloria' and reggae legend Peter Tosh duetting with Mick Jagger on 'Don't Look Back'. The show's regular comedians also feature in musical interludes, among them Andy Kaufman doing his Elvis Presley impersonation, Gilda Radner as bad-tempered punk singer Candy Slice, John Belushi doing his Joe Cocker routine alongside the real Joe, Bill Murray as a cheesy bar-room entertainer, and Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi adopting their Blues Brothers alter egos to perform a cover of Sam & Dave's 'Soul Man'.

Chevy Chase hosts the compilation, and there are also interviews with musical director Howard Shore, resident band member Paul Shaffer and producer Lorne Michaels.

Subsequent volumes of the series concentrate on the later years of the programme's history.

It was cool seeing some of the stars of the past and their 'humble beginnings'

Little disapointed with this one. Certainly does not age well.

This is a compilation of music performances and sketches from the first years of Saturday Night Live. I rented this to see the music and I wasn't expecting such classic comedy sketches. John Belushi had the balls to do a fantastic Joe Cocker impression, alongside Joe Cocker, at one stage even trying to hand the guy a beer (he'd given up booze by this stage!). The Patti Smith spoof was spot on and Eric Idle was on hand as a studio hanger-on.

As music performances went, the Mick Jagger/Peter Tosh collaboration was unintentionally funny (at least I think it was unintentional!), Patti Smith was just as you'd expect. The most disappointing footage was of the Band's final TV appearance, you'd think there were 4 members (poor Richard didn't feature), they had a full brass section with them and it was intercut with photo stills, which seemed odd!

From a UK viewers perspective you'll see footage never seen over here, which is its main draw!

For those of us who are fans of the music and comedy of the original cast members of the legendary TV show Saturday Night Live, the likes of which included John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Chevy Chase and (Chase's replacement) Bill Murray, this is a real treat!

John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd's first live television performance as 'The Blues Brothers' is funny enough on it's own to make this DVD worth renting, but when you add in Belushi's interpretation of Joe Cocker doing well, Joe Cocker, (with Joe performing alongside of him), it becomes a must! Other highlights include young Elvis Costello's rebellion against his record company, Simon and Garfunkle's singing, Bill Murray's 'sexy' ski lodge crooner, Gilda Radner as fictional (but ever so authentic) 70's New York punk icon 'Candy Slice' and Andy Kaufmann's (played by Jim Carrey in the film bio-pic) priceless Elvis impersonation with a twist...

A combination of time capsule and unique variey show, altogether, an enjoyable night in.
