[Highly rated reviewer]The film has received much criticism for its 'slow and episodic' pace, 'bad' acting, and controversial elements. TO me the film was very direct in its approach and honestly quite tasteful for the subject matter. The pacing was as it should be. It was gradual not slow, it helped to build the tension. As for it being episodic, it is because the son is telling the story through his letters and journals. As for the acting I found it to be quite good with the exception of the son. I found his performance at times too emotionless. Julianne Moore more than makes up for it with her performance. She is a powerhouse. Brilliant Oscar worthy performance. The final scenes which I have heard are anticlimactic, in my opinion were refreshingly realistic and not overly dramatic.
So bottom line well-done film with an amazing performance by Julianne Moore, but could've been better with a more personal performance by the son

savage graceBy a customer from EDINBURGH , 30 Oct 2009Stunning settings, and an insight into a wealthy, jaded family life as things gradually get darker and darker for the protaginists.
homosexuality, incest and addiction mean that this film is never going to reach a mass market and it is difficult viewing in places but despite that it is as powerful as it is disturbing with julianne moores performance as the vulnerable but manipulative mother will leave you deeply impressed.
slow burnerBy Randomfilmbuff (327 reviews) from London , 16 Oct 2009the first 15 mins were dull and i thought this was going to be terrible. but it started to pick up and by the end i thought this was very good. very creepy and sick in places but excellent dialogue and teh usual great performance by julie-anne moore as barbara
Bleak but rivetingBy Madeline (5 reviews) from Diss , 11 Sep 2009I found this movie extremely bleak and at times very uncomfortable to watch, but it has stayed with me, the characters are extreme but believable. I would recommend it if you like to explore or understand people cracking up and living on the edge. And it is a true story. The acting is superb and the settings/period detail great. My husband and a male friend lliked it less than me.
Savage GraceBy a customer from Yeovil , 27 Aug 2009I am really gutted with this movie becoz no subtitles but i know from the description on what its all about... its true based story...
Not for meBy crispin40 (563 reviews) from Stirling, Scotland , 15 Aug 2009Began to watch this but found it too mannered and the Stephan Dillane character was so cold. Then the phone rang and by the time I'd finished my phone call, I decided I could do without watching the rest of the film.
