[Highly rated reviewer]The film has received much criticism for its 'slow and episodic' pace, 'bad' acting, and controversial elements. TO me the film was very direct in its approach and honestly quite tasteful for the subject matter. The pacing was as it should be. It was gradual not slow, it helped to build the tension. As for it being episodic, it is because the son is telling the story through his letters and journals. As for the acting I found it to be quite good with the exception of the son. I found his performance at times too emotionless. Julianne Moore more than makes up for it with her performance. She is a powerhouse. Brilliant Oscar worthy performance. The final scenes which I have heard are anticlimactic, in my opinion were refreshingly realistic and not overly dramatic.
So bottom line well-done film with an amazing performance by Julianne Moore, but could've been better with a more personal performance by the son

yawn!By a customer from Ruislip , 12 Aug 2009Julianne Moore, such a good actor is laid bare as an example of no matter how good you are bad direction is bad direction! From the outset the adult childs recount voice over is flat, which sums up the film in one. It comes across as a made for TV Poirot (cold stares, quick camera switches) - except for the bordering incestuous relationship mother/son. So bad I couldn't bare to watch it or indeed listen to Julianne Moores' voice or the bad Euro accents to the end of the film! Even the support actors were a pastiche.
terrible!By a customer from Bangor , 08 Aug 2009What a disappointment, got this dvd cause of J Moore but it was shocking, awful, distasteful and a waste of our Saturday night. 15 cert is not appropriate either should be higher.
DisturbingBy Coquelicot (18 reviews) from Sturminster Newton , 02 Aug 2009I think Julianne Moore is a great actress and there is no doubt with this movie too, but her role was disturbing for me and I didn't enjoyed too much the movie.
BoringBy a customer from Ely , 30 Jul 2009I found that this film was too slow and dull to be in the least shocking. I was interrupted before it got to the end and was not sufficiently interested in what happened to the characters to turn it back on and watch to the end. Definitely one of the worst films I have half seen recently.
