The second sequel to Scanners, after Scanners II: The New Order, finds Liliana Komorowska experimenting with a new mind-blowing drug. The result is a serious personality change from sweet young thing to psychotic megalomaniac with an ability to scan through TV airwaves and sway the masses to her ruthless power trip. The only person in her way is brother Steve Parrish who returns from a sojourn in a monastery to give her a piece of his own expanding mind. Although not a patch on the classic David Cronenberg original, Canadian director Christian Duguay handles the more knockabout action with flair and wit (Komorowska's delightfully campy villain helps enormously) and covers the gore bases with everything from exploding fingers to a particularly impressive underwater cranium blast.
The intriguing notion of the first film has now become an excuse for a horror movie indistinguishable from, and no more distinguished than, a hundred others.
I love Scanners movies! So when I spotted this one I got very excited. 5 minutes into the movie and I realised I'd seen it all before - literally! I think this movie was originally released in the UK as 'Scanner Force'. Disappointing - who decided to rename it? Be warned, don't rent this if you've seen it first time around.
